Beyond Cyprus: Investigating Cypriot Connectivity in the Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age to the End of the Classical Period
One of the most important outreach activities of the CyCoMed research project was the international Cyprological conference “Beyond Cyprus: Investigating Cypriot Connectivity in the Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age to the End of the Classical Period”. The conference was organised by the principal investigator of CyCoMed, Dr Giorgos Bourogiannis, under the auspices of the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.
Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference took place digitally, in 8–11 December 2020. The sessions of the Cyprological conference were built upon three chief thematic pillars of archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic content. Emphasis was placed on Cypriot evidence from extra-insular sites so as to investigate the nature of Cypriot activity and perhaps presence in the Medeitterranean, from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman era.
The programme of the conference comprised almost 60 participants and 50 papers, representing 14 countries and 34 academic and research institutions. Participants treated a broad range of subjects, including Cypriot material culture and its distribution in the Mediterranean, religion, Cypriot trade activity and mobility, migration, cross-cultural contacts, artistic influences, the dispersal of Cypriot coinage, languages and writing systems.
The full programme and abstracts of the conference are available here. The whole conference is now available to view on the YouTube channel of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.
The conference volume was published in 2022. Its full title is Bourogiannis, G. (ed.), Beyond Cyprus: Investigating Cypriot connectivity in the Mediterranean from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Classical period (Athens University Review of Archaeology Suppl. 9), Athens 2022.
